It seems as though everyday there are people here at camp who have a common thread with us or someone else. For instance, I told the other challenge course hosts about our new granddaughter, Olivia. A few days later one of them came up to us and said that we sort of have someone in common. Elder and Sister Gurney's granddaughter is married to Ty's brother. That means their granddaughter is an aunt to our granddaughter!
There are missionaries here who actually grew up in the same ward in North Carolina and moved several times each. All of these years later they ran into each other as they were called to serve at Heber Valley Camp.
When our family was visiting here and we all attended the pot luck dinner, Robin looked across the pavilion and saw the visiting daughter of another missionary couple who was in her ward in Oceanside, California. Robin is now in American Fork and her previous ward member lives in Lehi so they have visited each other since running into each other here.
Reed went to Preston High School with someone who is serving with his wife at the Temple Square Mission. They came to see us and we took them on a tour. We introduced them to the missionaries at Legacy Lake. When they said they were serving at Temple Square, one of the Heber Valley Camp missionaries said he had a friend from back east who was serving at Temple Square. They thought it was coincidental that they had a friend in common. Then we took Reed's friends to visit another missionary who went to Preston High. They were talking over people, places and things. Reed's friend asked the other couple where they went when they moved from Preston. They said they lived in Corvallis, Oregon for 35 years but currently live in Newport. The Temple Square missionaries said they had a couple from Corvallis in their mission. And as it turned out, the camp missionaries knew the Temple Square missionaries from Corvallis well but lost track of them when they moved about 8 years ago.
We have a Kaysville Stake here this week. I mentioned that my grandparents lived in Kaysville and that is where my mother grew up. One person asked me what her name is. I told her that my mother had been gone from Kaysville for probably 65 years so she wouldn't have known her. She asked what her maiden name was anyway. When I said that it was 'Prigmore,' she said, "As in Gene and Leola?" When I said that they were my aunt and uncle, she said that Leola used to call and invite her mother to go to Jazz games with her and that she knew Nancy, Kathy and Mary Ann.
Another stake was Bountiful North. One of the wards was Bountiful 19th, the ward we attended back in '72 when we just had Kimberly. We knew several people in common including Reed's Aunt Betty.
Today one of the priesthood brethren who was helping at the giant swing asked Reed where we were from and was told we were from Cache Valley. When asked to be more specific, Reed told him we lived in Millville for 30 years but moved to Nibley 3 1/2 years ago. The guy said he worked with someone who lives in Millville and was wondering if we knew Jim Bodily. Of course we do, we lived in the same ward for 25 years or so.
I could go on and on about similar connections. These things happen every day. I will end on another note...on Monday Russell M. Nelson of the Council of the Twelve was here. He was being escorted around the camp. We happened to be leaving a Challenge Course Host meeting when he arrived. We had the honor of shaking his hand. I didn't dare ask if he would like to come to our challenge course.
