We work outside in the sun from about 8 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. each day. Here is a picture of my watch line. I have a farmer's tan. I am only tan from my elbows to my fingertips and a little "v" at the neckline. I guess the tops of my ears and my nose are also brown. My facial sunscreen, sunglasses and visor block enough sun to make me look like a racoon around the eyes.
This is the headstone of Reed's great-great-great grandmother, Amelia Brittingham Gray Neal Gallagher who is buried in the Heber City Cemetery. Reed came through the 2nd husband, John Neal. As you can see, the sandstone has deteriorated and broken off and it has bird droppings on it.
Thank goodness for Fridays! It is nice to have a little rest and relaxation on preparation day to get away from the rigors of our job. Last week we started up Provo Canyon and took off towards Sundance. From there we took the 'Alpine Loop' which was absolutely gorgeous! The mountainside abounds with numerous varieties of wild flowers in bloom. There were ferns all along the sides of the road. We want to take the drive again when the fall colors are in their splendor. We passed Timpanogas Cave where every available parking space was taken. Advance reservations are required to make the hike to the cave. We came out at the mouth of American Fork Canyon not far from Robin's home. We visited with the Burkhardts in their nice, new home. We went to Cabela's where Reed used the gift certificate the girls gave him towards a new pack for the back of his 4-wheeler. On the last trip to Cabela's we purchased rear-view mirrors for the 4-wheelers.
Today we drove to Park City and went to the outlet stores. We made a couple of minor purchases...a pair of shoes and a pair of pants. We drove around Park City and also Deer Valley. We stopped at the Utah Olympic Park which was the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is unbelievable how much the area has grown. Housing is very costly. It is where the rich and famous have summer mansions or winter lodging during the ski season.
During the week we were invited to a party for the Challenge Course Hosts in celebration of putting in 200 hours of facilitating sessions following our 80 hours of Level 1 and Level 2 training. One of the hosts uses old Maytag washer or dryer drums in which to build a campfire. It was pretty neat. We had some tasty treats and visited all evening long.
Hyrum 12th Ward was one of the groups we had on our challenge course on Wednesday. It was fun to have Cache Valley connections here. Two of the young women leaders were friends of Candace during their younger years...Marcy Haslam Bingham and Elise James Haslam. Anthony Haslam (Marcy's brother and Elise's husband) was in Robin's class at school. Elise is the daughter of Paul James and granddaughter of Don and Maxine James. Marcy is the daughter-in-law of my friends and fellow ward members, Susan and Blaine Bingham. Jodi was friends with Ben Haslam who now works for Homeland Security in Salt Lake. He speaks fluent Russian due to serving a mission there. He and his wife just had their 2nd child.
Jodi had a baby girl on July 8th at 7:30 a.m. She weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces. Because of fluid in the lungs, she didn't get to go home for about 8 days. Her name will be Olivia Paige Hawkins. Mom and baby are doing well. Olivia is our 16th grandchild. We have now been blessed with 8 granddaughters and 8 grandsons. Olivia joins two older brothers: Miles (11 months) and Owen (3 on August 24th). We would have liked to have been in Oklahoma to help out.
Jill has been recovering from her para-sailing accident at Lake Powell on July 3rd. She was battered and bruised but is lucky to be alive. Reed got kicked in the sunglasses by a young women leader while he was trying to slow her down on the giant swing. He has been sporting a black eye for a couple of weeks but it is mostly gone now.
Andrew was rear-ended on State Street so his car has been in the repair shop. Someone removed their new microwave above their stove and left a microwave that didn't work in its place. The Rainbird sprinkler system control box on the back of their house was also taken and a different brand box was left.
Our oldest granddaughter, Courtney, will be coming here to Young Women's camp this next week. She will be in the camp closest to our cabin but will not be on our challenge course.
