While in New York, we made a side trip to Sodus. Reed's great-great-great-great grandfather, Jacob Buys, lived there for a while. We stopped by a cemetery to see the graves of Jacob's son, also named Jacob, and his wife, Lucy, one of their sons, William E., along with his three wives and a young daughter. Reed's great-great-great grandmother, Sarah Buys (a sister to the younger Jacob Buys, above) joined the Presbyterian Church when she was 18, was counseled by the church leadership when she was 20, and was excommunicated from the Presbyterian Church at age 21 for being pregnant and unwed. It was in Sodus that she married Alfred Walton and gave birth to her firstborn, Darwin Mosier Walton, who is Reed's great-great grandfather. Sodus is east of Rochester, a couple of miles south of Lake Ontario, and about 16 miles north of Palmyra. We stopped at the village offices in Sodus to find out where to locate the Bushnell Cemetery. The cemetery is an old, small, unmarked graveyard. I was particularly happy to find out for sure how to spell the last name of Buys. Geneology sheets had it listed with several different spellings...Bice, Brice, Buyse and Buys.

There is an inscription on Lucy's headstone. The script is small, worn and difficult to read. I am uncertain of what it says, especially the 3rd line. So far, this is what I have come up with:
Dearest mother thou hath left us.
And thy loss we deeply feel.
It is God that ?path? ?? us?
He can all our sorrows heal.
